Mental Health Awareness

The Mental Health Awareness course is for those who would like to start the journey to a better understanding of mental health and how to provide a supportive, positive environment.

In the course we’ll look into the following:

  • Raise awareness of mental health and how it can vary

  • Outline different mental health problems

  • Share tips for supporting people

  • Explore how mental health and wellbeing interact with daily life

  • Highlight stigma and discrimination, and how to tackle them

  • Share tips on how to have supportive conversations about mental health

  • Provide sources of support and information

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone who'd like a better understanding of mental health conditions.

Duration

This is a 1 day course.

Topics covered:

  • What mental health means to you

  • What might contribute to a mental health problem – inequality in mental health support

  • Stigma - What is it? How can it affect our mental health. And how we can tackle it.

  • Stress - What is stress? Stress versus pressure, managing stress, dealing with pressure, treating signs and symptoms of stress

  • Introduction to mental health – what are mental health problems, mental health and mental wellbeing, what is depression, what causes depression, how might depression feel, what is anxiety, what causes anxiety, how might anxiety feel

  • Mental health continued - schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, PTSD, eating disorders, OCD

  • Suicide - who can be at risk, how to help someone feeling suicidal, if someone needs help urgently, looking after yourself

  • Empathy - what is empathy, why is it important, having conversations

  • Mental health and the law - Mental Health Act 1983, Equality Act, protected characteristics, telling an employer about mental health problems

  • Mental health and life - how common are mental health problems, resilience, 5 ways to wellbeing, sleep and mental health, money and mental health

  • Sources of support - sources of support for mental health at work. How Mind can help

Certification

Level 1 Award in Awareness for First Aid for Mental Health will be issued to the learner through ‘First Aid Awards UK’ subject to successful assessment.

This qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. It is strongly recommended that the learner attends annual refresher training. The learner will need to complete the full course again to requalify for a further three years.
